Man'yoshu (Manyoushuu, Manyoshu), also called “Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves”; is one of the oldest Japanese poetry collections which still exists. This collection was written by all kinds of people, such as: merchants, soldiers, farmers and even emperors. The collection is divided into 20 books and consists of the following:

  • 4 Chinese poems.
  • 22 passages of Chinese prose.

The theme of the poems varies among love poems, nature poems and poems about life. Although, most authors are unknown, there are many famous Asian poets, such as:

  • No Kakinomoto Hitomaro.
  • Yamabe no Akahito.
  • Yamanoe Okura no.
  • Otomo Yakamochi no.

Nobody knows exactly, who compiled these books, but some historians believe that these books were compiled by Otomo no Yakamochi.

Kaguyama

This poem was written by the emperor Jomei, when he was climbing Kaguyama.

..

Yamato no kurasuta-ka sa

reta oka no ma de

Sore wa ama mu Kaguyama -

chikaku ni arimasu

Watashi wa noboruto tochi o

hyoji suru ni wa, tatte iru koto

Koko to soko ni wa, heiya-bu kara

kemuri josho no ka To kamome wa,

mizuumi kara tsubasa o toru.

Hai.. Amai kuni ni wa kono

tonbo no shimadesu.

Yamato no kono tochi

Among Yamato's

clustered hills

it is close-by

Ama no Kaguyama that

I climb and stand

to view the land

Here and there curls of

smoke rise from the plain and gulls

take wing from the lakes.

Yes…a sweet country

it is this dragonfly isle.

this land of Yamato

Hosokawa (Anonymous)

Bo o tsukuru koto.

Nejire wa karera ga

sorera no to ki no yama no kiri wa,

Tufting.

Twisting are they not

those Tamu mountain mists,

so densely gathered

that make

the waves

in the Hosokawa rapids

roar so loud?

Kaguyama (Anonymous)

Ama mu Kaguyama ijo

Namae wa, tsuneni

Kono yoru wa, heizu wa,

tana no yona so ni

kake rarete iru

Sore wa haru ga

watashi-tachi no ue ni aru

hyoji sa renai hoho!

Over Ama no Kaguyama

whose name recalls

the ever-enduring sky ,

this evening a haze

is hung in

shelf-like layers

how it does

appear spring

is upon us!
